Defending IE6
Lately I’ve noticed an increasing trend among web designers/developers who are proudly announcing their decision to drop Internet Explorer 6 from their list of supported browsers, or advocating ways that enforce IE6 users into upgrading. Some of these methods are good for a laugh, some … view full post
sIFR solution
At the beginning of this year, I briefly bitched about problems implementing Mike’s sIFR – a client-side text-to-flash replacement technique – on this site. Today I found a solution to the scalable problem I’ve experienced using sIFR on some recent projects: by adding the display property with inline as the value to … view full post
A summary of CSS-based layout techniques
Over the past few months, I’ve mentioned in my weblob a number of new and exciting layout techniques that have surfaced. Below is a summary of the traditional CSS-based, tableless layouts, and these new techniques that you as a web designer would hopefully consider while planning a standards-compliant site. A fresh squeeze of lime
You might notice some changes I’ve made around here. Most noticeably the colour scheme – I’ve impulsively switched from red to a fresh lime green. You might need to clear out your cache or reload to get the updated stylesheet and related images.

Rebranded. Redesigned. Redeveloped.
It’s taken over a month, but it’s felt like a year – presenting the fifth redesign of coda.coza in as many years.

The Standards Police will get you!
Oh the irony – it appears that the Standards Police have caught up with me. Three words for you, Charl: validation isn’t everything. Considering three of my websites were involved in your local standard-compliancy study (this one, the V&A Waterfront and the Cape Town BIG 6), I feel I should say … view full post
Redesigns and Inspiration
May is redesign month, since a fair number of sites I frequent (all web-related) have changed their look. Then there was the big Blogger redesign, with some subtle id maintenance thrown in. And of course some big corporates jumping on the standard-compliant bandwagon: … view full post
Teamscience listed in CSS galleries
It’s nice to find that the Teamscience website which I completed almost a year ago, is listed on a couple of new sites among other XHTML/CSS-based, standards-compliant designs.

Ad blocking with Mozilla
I’ve referred to the Mozilla project fifty five (56 now) times on this site in the past, because for me it’s the most exciting cross-platform OS application that has successfully reached a mainstream audience, even if it’s market penetration has … view full post
IOL converted to a standards-compliant CSS layout
A small project I started a while ago but never quite got around to publishing was my conversion of the large IOL news website homepage into a W3C standards-based, table-less, CSS layout. Not because I had nothing better to do with my time (although I was sick with flu), … view full post
