More notes on v6
This post follows on from my previous one and mostly covers the changes I've made to the rest of this site. But before that, there was some interest in the WordPress plugins that I'm using:
- Configurable Tag Cloud (hoping to switch to Cumulus when it's more customisable)
- Fuzzy DateTime (for the tooltips on my timestamps)
- Get Recent Comments
- Popularity Contest (most popular posts)
- Similar Posts
- the_excerpt Reloaded (more customisable than WP's default excerpt function, it allows you to exclude elements such as images, links, etc.)
- WP Super Cache (installed after reading this)
I should add that I've modified some of them to better fit my requirements.
And on to the rest.
Home: I'm still deciding if I like the "splash page" approach or not. The idea for the "latest updates" list is that it will include updates to my portfolio and photography sections. It's a nasty bit of work to make that happen so it's just listing my recent blog posts for now.
Portfolio: I removed a lot of old projects and added in a few new ones, and there's a couple others outstanding that I'll be adding over time. I'm using jQuery's ThickBox for inline popups which contain full screenshot images or iframed content.
Photography: I'm still using the discontinued Oberkampf script to mirror my Flickr content, but am considering switching to phpFlickr which is more active. Unfortunately the Flickr API doesn't support Collections yet, and until then I can't think of any better way to list my photosets other than a long list. I'm using ThickBox again to display larger sizes and slideshows.
Bio: I rewrote the copy and added a silly photo - not very exciting.
Contact: I added a downloadable vCard, and you can also find me on Twitter.
There are four sections that I've removed - "projects", "words", "links" and "weblob":
- Projects: this page stagnated from day one of v5. So I ditched it.
- Words: an assortment of jokes/quotes/whatever that I've collected over the years - are now integrated into my blog, and you can find them using the words tag.
- Links: I'm planning to reintroduce this section once I've integrated my 1180+ links with a social bookmarking service. I've tried the popular ones (del.icio.us, ma.gnolia, BlinkList, Furl) and I don't like any of them so far. del.icio.us I found to be the most ridiculous - by default it flags imported bookmarks as "not shared", which means I have to manually change each individual bookmark's privacy setting! Where's the love? I also struggled with tag renaming, it's really buggy.
- Weblob: my "mini blog" or "side notes" as they're more commonly known, which consisted of random links (accompanied by a short snippet or personal commentary) that weren't substantial enough to warrant their own blog post. This is also something I'd like to reintroduce but I haven't yet decided how exactly, although I have some ideas.
And that's all folks! Regular blogging will resume...

Yeah was looking forward to seeing what you use under the bonnet on your new theme Damien. Glad you chose jQuery in the end.
Love the list styling with the hover effects.
DUDE – you rock!! this looks really awesome. You outdid yourself here. I’ll have to pay you plenty to help me do mine…
Damien,
You can change the default del.icio.us behavior so that it doesn’t put the not shared tag in there.
@Chris: not with imported bookmarks unfortunately, see their FAQ:
How do I share all my imported bookmarks?
To make a bookmark public, click the “share” link located on the right of its description. We don’t have a “share all” button right now for a few reasons: to make sure you know exactly what you’re sharing, to encourage you to edit your imported links, and to prevent abuse.
Useful huh.
Ahh… imported bookmarks. I had that problem too. But I just ended up making all of my bookmarks public IIRC.
I really like the way your cloud is set up…the contrast fits well with the overall look of your page…plus it’s using my code…and that’s always nice to see :)
@Keith: thanks are in order, nice plugin!
Thanks for sharing the plug-ins! I found some that I never heard of before. I love WP Cumulus, thinking about how to incorporate into my blog.
Hot, hot design. Found it through Adii’s site. Nice work!
Quick question cause I’m lazy! Have you done any research into upgrading to Wordpress 2.6?
I’ve been delaying it myself for the fear of upgrade issues, corrupting databases, etc…
@Francois: No I haven’t, but I know I will have issues because I’ve edited some of the core WP files. If you’re running a default install then you shouldn’t have a problem. I’d give it a go, but just make sure you have a backup of everything first. They provide a choice of upgrade methods on their site, probably worth checking that out.
@coda: Thank-you! I think I modified two or three lines in the core, but nothing serious. I’ll give it a go and let you know if I have any weird problems.
@coda: Hi Damien
Did the upgrade to WP 2.6.1 today.
No problems whatsoever. I’ve only got about 70 posts and 300 comments, and two core mods, so it was a simple upgrade.
Procedure was:
1. Backup main database,
2. restore to test system,
3. copy new wordpress files to test system,
4. apply core-mods on test system,
5. run …/wp-admin/upgrade.php to update DB on test system,
6. UAT on test system
7. copy updated wordpress to production system as ‘blog_update’,
8. renamed current ‘blog’ directory to ‘blog_old’,
9. renamed ‘blog_update’ to ‘blog’,
10. run …/wp-admin/upgrade.php to update DB on production system,
11. UAT on production system
And voila.
One of the easiest upgrades I’ve ever done. I’m quite impressed.
Извините за офф-топик, не подскажете, где мона такой же симпатичный шаблон для блога взять?
