digicam.coza Stats
Clicking through my Thunderbird folders that collect filtered, low priority messages (which I check on an irregular basis), I discovered the following: since the beginning of last month I've received 350 Account Activation requests via digicam.coza. All of them from spammers. This after deleting over 1000 spam comments on the site a few months ago, before I enabled account activation. The eCard feature is also taking abuse. Lovely!
digicam.coza, online since March 2002, consists of 2895 images in 123 categories. In it's horribly stagnant state (last updated late 2004 when I joined Flickr), it currently ranks 2nd in Google for the keyword 'digicam'. I noticed this a while ago but never understood why, so I checked my stats hoping to find a possible explanation. They revealed the following:
- Each month the site is attracting an average of 20 000 visits (60 000 page views, 250 000 hits) and is consuming over 6GB of bandwidth.
- So far this month, Tuesday has received half the number of visits than any other day of the week. Wednesdays are most popular. Traffic peaks at 7pm.
- MySpace users account for over 75% of the total monthly hits, who are using my images as their profile backgrounds: example 1, example 2 (those are the most popular). Then there are the Friendster, LiveJournal and Xanga users too.
- Google Image Search accounts for 93% of the total hits from a search engine, followed by Google Web Search (5.5%), Yahoo (0.7%), MSN (0.4%) and AOL (0.2%).
- Top keyphrases used on search engines after 'digicam' include 'shark eggs', 'cherry trees', 'yde', 'butt crack' and 'mr bean car'. Of the total 268 different phrases so far this month, the longest is 'i hated kurt cobain i killed him i hate myself too and i want to kill myself too'.
- Two geographical page views are via Niue (.nu) - an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean and one of the world's largest coral islands. Who niue?!
- There have only been two 404 status codes (Document Not Found) this entire year, both were backdoor attempts.
There's some memorable stuff up there - my short-lived Poetic Terrorism project (don't ask), some of my old Photoshop Contest entries, Candy, Idols presenter (who remembers that?) and the Kurt Cobain tee photo (check the comments, hilarious!).
I'm not about to retire the site any day soon. One of my original intentions for it was to build a South African Digital Photography community. I haven't abandoned that idea completely, but it might be a while still. Until then I'll continue to entertain the idea of generating online child-safety hype by adding some server rules to serve all MySpace requests with goatse instead. Or not wanting to be old skool, a gigantic animated gif that flashes "coda 0wnz0rs your MySpace" at epileptic-inducing speeds. Decisions, decisions.

Damien.. what I did once upon a time, which could easily be adapted to digicam, is write a simple date/time function, which basically automatically changes the look of a website via switching css files. I have looked for the code and unfortunately cannot find it, but it was really straight forward, 20lines or so, just to overwrite some text.
It worked lovely, every month, a new style sheet would be automatically implemented and the website would appear as though it had been totally redesigned :)
Anyway, just an idea :-)
Haha, go for the “I 0wnz U” option, just pick your colours right: primary RGB!
Ian: I signed up for that reason – it’s an enlightening experience that something so badly executed can become so successful. I cursed my way through the sign-up process and then hacked away at customizing my template until I got bored, and I haven’t touched it since. But I do like that I can login now when required.
Martin: How about #FF0 on #0F0 … grooovy baby!
I did it the other day… got me some space. I have always hated MySpace, and really can’t fathom how Tom can be running the most popular site in the US, and still it looks and works like a piece of ****. He does however have alot of friends now (+- 118790756), which was probably his initial ambition…
Oh btw, why did you abandon digicam as an online photo community ? What’s missing ? Do you know how big sites (eg myspace) get those additional section links under them on google search results ?
Hey Damien
Yeah myspace blows. Saw a comment on Techcrunch the other day from a US retailer who said that while myspce referred more traffic than MSN or Yahoo!, it was 100% image hotlinking and so not worth a cent.
Kind of like kids skateboarding outside a mall – there are lots of them there, but they’re not buying anything.
Anyway, cool site. Thanks for the link.
jon: lots is missing.. the idea is that it’s a place for buying/selling of digital prints, files, etc. – photographers build up their portfolios, manage sales, etc. – not exactly a walk in the park. DeviantArt is a good model for comparison although since it’s redesign I find it’s lost all of it’s appeal.
I’ve always wondered about those links too – I thought it might be related to Google Sitemaps, but it seems like only the high traffic sites have them. Anyone know?
Muso: Sweet man, great blog! Keep it rocking!
Great hits, congrats.
1 question. There are about 3 websites that contain just about the same looks as your’s.
1. http://www.mattbrett.com
2. http://www.avalonstar.com
3. this one is your’s.
and my true question is how did you guys manage to have just about the same layout?
Now excuse me but i would love to know what type of scripts and layouts are yall using, cuz they are great websites.
Nice work on your website.
ps. plz respond thank you.
Jonathan: Thanks. My current design has been online for over 2 years, if you think there are similarities (I don’t) then maybe you should ask the others.
Re: scripts/layout: I’m not sure what you mean in particular, but perhaps this portfolio page will offer some insight. Cheers.
Dude I think you were influenced by my blog. Even though I did the 3 column thing years after you, I still reckon it looks similar. Happy B-Day design thief, hit counter, code stealer … I’ve told you, build a new site.
Hah, thanks mate

Gawd… MySpace sucks.
I’m always tempted to actually signup so that I can experience it a bit more, but then I know I’ll hate myself for ever if I do.
