Rocking The Daisies review

There were thorns instead of daisies, but it definately rocked! I spent this past weekend camping out at the inaugural Rocking The Daisies Haystacks music festival on the West Coast, 75km outside Cape Town.

There was everything I've come to expect from a well organized music fest. Great friends, crowds, food. Unpredictable weather (rain never killed anyone though - except for that one time, hey Dave!). The habitual drunkards who you never see sober, the biker gang, the hippies, and wandering dog that everybody wants to pet. The big afrikaans family from Belville who bring everything but the kitchen sink. Scary porta-potties. But most importantly awesome live music - highlights were Palms Up, Parlotones, HHH (gotta love their "Great Heart" cover) and Goldfish.

Friday night/Saturday morning is a bit blurry... from learning about everything there is to know about killer moths, to TGB sightings, to following up on an invite from a girl named 'grass' to join a not-happening drumming circle, to instead inviting the cops to join us for a drink, to scaling the light towers after they'd left, to singing karaoke to Coldplay and Bob Marley at 4:30am. If the weather played it's part I'm guessing we might have taken a dip in that sorry excuse for a dam - maybe next year.

I learnt the hard way, that those 1cm thin camping mats you can buy at Game (who are already putting up their Xmas displays) are total crap and hardly an easy substitute for an inflatable matress. No wonder Cape Union Mart don't sell them.

I packed my camera and never bothered to take any pics, but snapped a few with Vorn's so I'll link those up eventually. Maybe some random mobile shots will suffice until then. This one sums it up for me.

Well done Dave and crew for pulling off such an awesome start to Rocktober.

UPDATE [03/10]: Vorno has flickered his photos and youtubed a video of Rory Elliot (new song!) - check it!

UPDATE [01/11]: A month later, they've finally added a photo gallery to their website as promised!
