Flickr Darkr

A few months ago I had the idea to create a user script for Greasemonkey that would basically skin Flickr with a darker theme, because I find viewing photography much more attractive against a dark background.

So I played around a bit (using the EditCSS Firefox extension). It didn't quite work out, and considering Flickr is always in a state of beta/gamma/redesign chaos, it would require a lot of upkeep whenever they changed something.

Say hi to Oberkampfâ„¢ (by Michael Madrid), a library of PHP functions that interface with your Flickr account via their API to allow for a custom gallery. Unfortunately, development on Oberkampf was discontinued last year, but the code is well written and documented which makes a good base for expanding on.

Anyway, take a look at my new Flickr page which I've spent the past hour playing with. Oberkampf is fairly easy to install but there aren't any existing templates so most of the work involves creating the actual gallery pages yourself. My thinking is that if I ever get around to uploading my digicam.coza albums (2896 photos) to my Flickr account, then this new page will replace my aging and spam-ridden digicam.coza gallery.

Coool and impressive. I didn’t know about Oberkampf. It looks like just what I’m after. I’ll have to have a dabble and see what it can do for me. I’ve been working on and using the FAlbum Wordpress plugin but the lead developer has gone into a code-bloat frenzy and just doesn’t follow the KISS principle of coding.

That’s so funny.. I read your post just as I was downloading phpFlickr, which is a PHP wrapper class, around Flickr’s API. I’m thinking of doing a redesign, and pulling sets from Flickr sounds like the best gallery option by far. Your coda gallery looks awesome, nice one. I might just have to have a look at this oberkampf…

Colin: that plugin looks pretty neat, it allows you to edit the photo title and description, awesome.

jon: Oberkampf doesn’t do comments, where phpFlickr does, but I guess building that in wouldn’t be too much work? I like the idea of keeping it simple so pulling in the comments isn’t a big priority for me.

I have no idea what the API allows, looks like anything is possible? Flick really should build a template engine and extend on their customization, and save us the work. ;)

Yup, it is pretty neat, but for doing the simple things, it’s a bit over-the-top. I don’t need all that additional functionality (that’s what flickr’s for after all) and it takes too much effort to strip it down, and it’s too slow leaving it all in.

I’ve been playing with Oberkampf a bit more today, and the code looks very similar to the original code FAlbum was forked from here. It’s just a lot simpler, cleaner, quicker and more up to date.

I’m just now working on making the URLs friendly with Oberkampf and I think I’ll ditch FAlbum.
