Vote for the Gautrain logo
With R5 000 up for grabs in prizes, Gautengers have been urged to vote for one of two logos for the Gautrain, both of which "Africanise the Gautrain brand". More about the Gautrain at Wikipedia and on the official website (more "::"...!).
"This will be a brand that reflects the views of the people of Gauteng," said the MEC for finance and economic affairs, Paul Mashatile, at a media briefing on Tuesday, 7 March.
Gauteng residents have until Friday, 17 March to register their vote, which can be done through a 24-hour telephone line on 083 918 0801, through an online vote on the Gautrain website, or by sending an SMS to 32310.
The idea was to establish a brand that was as recognisable as many familiar brands that bombarded us in everyday life, said the MEC for public transport, roads and works, Ignatius Jacobs.
The brand needed to reflect the major cities of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane, and be part of a "world-class African hub".
Although I prefer the typography of the first logo, the colours and shapes of the second are more appropriate - considering that this is not a national railway so using the flag colours isn't necessary, while the shapes of the second logo convey a stronger feeling of efficient movement (as the rationale also suggests). Which is your favourite and why?

Definitely the second logo. Agree that usage of the flag is overkill. Usage of the country’s flag colours is starting to become a little boring and a little clichéd
Agree 100% … I prefer the second logo, but I must admit that I’m impressed with both…
Yep, def. the second one. Not sure what the deal with the typography in the second… it’s pleasing on the whole… ;)

Before reading to the end of your blog, I looked at the images and decided exactly that! I wondered about the decision for using the national flag colours and shapes, enjoyed the feeling of motion from the second one, and wished that they’d used the first type on both logos. Even though type is a biggie for me, I’d have to go with the second one, purely due to the totally innappropriate and misleading use of colour & shape in the first logo.
