Fight for Light
Low-cost airline kulula.com are on a mission to introduce DST (daylight saving time) in South Africa by this time next year. Read how and why on their petition website.

Huge cost savings could be made by business, there would be fewer power cuts in Gauteng, some types of crime would fall and there would be more time for outdoor leisure activities if South Africans put their clocks forward one hour in spring and back one hour in autumn.
The experience of about 70 countries throughout the world has shown that businesses save money by bringing the peak hour for electricity consumption - between 6pm and 7pm - forward an hour so that it will still be daylight in summer. This would reduce the load on Eskom, making power outages less frequent.
As with most things, DST receives it's fair share of criticism. Via Wikipedia:
It is also speculated that one of the benefits, more afternoon sun, would also actually increase energy consumption as people get into their cars to enjoy more time for shopping and the like.
No formal studies have been performed, but an enormous amount of time has been spent by software developers to deal with the fact that 2400 hours past 2pm is not necessarily 2pm 100 days later.
I think the pros outweigh the cons, and if after giving it some proper though, would probably like to see it happen. At the time of writing this, their online petition already has 15731 signatures. If you're interested, add your name here!

Boooo! Come on, how cr*p is it on that one day of the year when you get one hour less sleep because someone decided you need to put your clocks forward at midnight. I HATE THAT!
Cry me a river :p
Ian… you get to sleep later one day as well you know… :-)
I think it is cool and the Capies will really have oodles of sun in the summer.
On the other hand why dont we cut an hour of the work hours in the winter? That would do the same?
… here in Denmark DST is a moot point, 5,5hrs of daylight in winter means that you arrive and leave from work in the dark!
Brilliant way to gather loads of spam-addresses. :)

Come. on.
Are you being serious? Time is linear, continuous and not to be screwed with. Just look at what happens in the movies… Just a little here and there, and before we know it: Bam! Back to the Future.
Besides, secretaries and lazy-ass salespeople all over SA will cost their employers even more… Yeah, I’m a slave driver, sue me!
