Of late…

By now you're hopefully aware of the G8 REBOOT initiative.

To be honest, I was a little sceptical when fellow saffer Gareth e-mailed me with his ideas for the reboot, given the time frame, my current workload, and the Make Povery History campaign's existing and extensive involvement resources. But after a week of e-mail exchange, I became convinced that it was certainly something worth at least attempting.

So I threw together a logo, we met up a few days later (it turned out that Gareth lives just around the corner from my flat) and over two nights working into the early morning, we completed and launched the website. Gareth wrote a press release on Thursday and has done a good job of getting the word out.

It's over to you now - if you own a website, or know someone that does, please lend us your screens. Community create awareness. Also take a second to add your voice. Saturday July 2nd will be the day the world demands justice. And if you're one of the lucky-1-in-7-chance buggers to attend the London concert and see Coldplay live, but can't decide who to take with... how ya doin'! ;)

And on that note, bands your iPod will love you for. Taking Back Sunday. Last Sunday. F-awesome! Oh yeah, and that Green Day band were good too. ;) We unfortunately missed the beginning of Jimmy Eat World's set, and didn't quite get into it after that. I'd love to catch them as a headline act. It's the humble opinion of this blogger that they would've stolen the show given the chance. I flickr'ed a couple of photos - or if you prefer, my four favourite shots. And.

What else. Web Designer magazine invited me to feature in an upcoming issue, in a profile Q&A format along with selected items from my portfolio. I'll let you know when it hits the shelves. Also thanks to WellVetted (twice over), CSS Import and cssdesign.se for the recent linkage lovin'.

And lastly, random rant - what's with people misspelling Cape Town as "Capetown"! R.E.M. did this on their latest tour which really grated me, as have a few others since. Or coda.coza as "Coda Coza", for that matter. Come now, respect the brand. :)

Speaking of R.E.M., I just saw them in Oslo! I just thought I’d mention that I remember our long IRC chats about music and politics – which leads me to shove Michael Stipe saying something like this in your face (or your blog as it may be)

“We live in strange times and come from a strange country. We wrote this next song in protest to the policies of our government”

Anyways, they rocked! Not as much as Rage Against the Machine though, but they were pretty good non the less.

Hey man, Taking Back Sunday is great!

Haha, and as you are a true perfectionist I understand why you are complaining about the misspelling. Must admit that things like these annoys me too sometimes…

MN: Lucky you! I forfeited my R.E.M. in Scotland ticket to see Jimmy Eat World & Taking Back Sunday. But eish! IRC, that was long ago! Refresh? Stipe is well known as a human rights/etc. activist (check this out – Stipe visiting an Oxfam project in the Western Cape), so it’s not suprising that politics would feature in their music. The song was ‘Final Straw’. In fact I just read that ‘Orange Crush’ is an anti-war song too, I had no idea!

jawrr: “annoy”, not “annoys”! ;) … lol, just kidding. It’s more a given that you’d correctly spell the city you’re performing in out of general courtesy and respect, bearing in mind that it appeared like that on the giant screens elsewhere prior on their global tour.

At least their typo wasn’t as bad as Alanis’s blunder of thanking the wrong country! whahaha.

A Norwegian band called Madrugada opened for R.E.M. They were excellent…get their album the Deep End.

Alas, I need new music. I’m bored. I recently got handed some The Music and Franz Ferdinand. Ever since I got an iPod last year I’ve been feeling limited by the endless shuffle of Rage Against the Machine and the Smashing Pumpkins (interspersed with a few other 90’s alt rock/grunge songs).

So, what 5 cd’s would you recommend? Must be new bands (and no dance/rap/r&b).

Thanks ;)

coda: Oh… well thanks for the spelling anyway (“annoy”, not “annoys”…). I have to blame it on my bad knowledge in english (I’m swede). ;P

Hi, great stuff brother.

I blogged the G8Reboot campaign on my humble little blog. I guess every bit helps?

Great to hear you enjoy Taking Back Sunday, they rock.

:p

To MN: They may not be new, but have a listen to Apocalyptica, four guys playing rock/metal on Cellos. Lots of Rammstein covers etc. Awesome.

Hey there, found your blog via iamcal.com’s London Bloggers Southfields page and thought I’d say hi (I’m off corner of Replingham Rd/Merton Rd). I have a bunch of projects looking for socially and politically (not to mention W3 standards) aware web designers so if you fancy taking a look drop me a line!

Good luck on the g8reboot! Good idea. One comment there: consider an “About” link so people know who’s behind it. It feels a bit anonymous & non-community right now. Just my opinion!

Cheers, Paul

MN: I haven’t picked up on any new bands in a while, just a few songs here and there. Try the latest albums from these bands: Switchfoot, Coldplay, Jimmy Eat World, Feeder. Although I’m equally into electronic music these days… Way Out West, Mylo, Hybrid, BT, Chicane, Daft Punk, etc.

Conrad: welcome to the blogosphere! ;)

Paul: Heydilly-ho neighbourino! thanks for the advice, we’ll consider it.

I’ve loved this site for a long time (actually it was one of a few sites to inspire my current design) and I missed the mayday reboot, so now I’m going to work on hitting this reboot with something jawesome (street sharks in the hizzouse).
