New Media Lab’s 10 question test

Before I matriculated, I had the choice to either study at a tertiary institution for a further 4 years (minimum), or attend a 1 year college course. At that time, City Varsity, a film, television and multimedia school, were the only "new media" course option available in Cape Town, but it didn't meet my requirements and I chose to study programming at CTI instead. In the end, I worked part-time for a small agency and after that gained 3 years of industry experience, instead of the IS degree.

It's refreshing today to have things like the New Media Lab at Rhodes University in Grahamstown - which, according to them, is "South Africa's foremost learning and research facility for multimedia journalism and media production."

Take this 10 question test to see if you're made of the right stuff for a new media specialisation or 3rd year design and new media course.

I tested myself for fun and scored a whooping 21.8% for Suitability:

You don't seem to live for new media right now, or have thought about the future in this field in great detail.

and 98% for Preparedness, which gives me the impression that I'm well prepared, although the accompanying text read:

You don't know much about new media. It's probably not your fault but you need to do somethign (sic) about that urgently if you want to be accepted into the new media course.

he he, I knew I should have ticked the “toaster” radio button:

56.4% Suitability :You have the potential to enjoy the new media course and areas you are currently lacking in terms of technology acceptance, etc will be socialised out of you by the end of the course. Apply, you have a good chance of being accepted

81% Preparedness You know enough to get into the new media course but you still have a lot to learn. Do some extra reading and start following technology development on a daily rather than annual basis.

I’m lacking in terms of technology acceptance? Man, these guys obviously didn’t study at a real university (like WITS). They could have at least made the test funny…I suppose that’s the problem when people who have some technical ability decide to use their own tools *g*

That test is a bunch o’ bullshit. By changing two answers ,from ‘Not sure’ to ‘Yes’ on whether cell phones and PC’s should be combined (really should they? They have completely different uses? Who the hell wants to do programming or hectic photoshop work on a goddamn cellphone) and from ‘meet in person’ to ‘call on phone’ for sources (which is complete bullshiat, meeting in person is ten times better than on the phone, at least initially), I went from 21% (where I have to ask Vanessa or Vincent pretty please to enter their course) to 58%.

i also did this test and everything that comes to my mind is:
this is bullshit!

hehe
not only the spellingmistakes …
it’s worse than a “are you prepared to fall in love?” magazine test in a lousy boulevard s*** &§%§$”

ok. calm…. down.

let me add one more thing:
i think, you know more about new media than this “new media lab” :)

Guys, you don’t know how hilarious this is – I know the guy who runs the NML and who made this test LOL – and it’s a pretty accurate reflection of the efficiency of the Journalism department as a whole at Rhodes. I actually did a 3 month intensive course in NML at the end of last year… ’nuff said.

It might be meant as light-hearted, but do you think that anyone filling out questionaire might be put off attending the course because of the results?

I have just started in the wonderful world of web and scored high – it must be giving reverse scores – ie: the less you know the higher you score…

40% You don’t seem to live for new media right now, or have thought about the future in this field in great detail. It’s advisable that you do not apply to do new media without discussing this test with Vincent or Vanessa beforehand.
Preparedness

81% You don’t know much about new media. It’s probably not your fault but you need to do somethign about that urgently if you want to be accepted into the new media course. Do some reading online and find out what the latest trends in online publishing and technology are.

LOL… umm .. fun time pass!
BooM!

LOL I am glad you guys are geting a chuckle out of this thing – obviously this test is bullshit, it was intended as a joke, the algorithm is non-existent and it freaks the students out much to my amusement.
