Iconfusion
I'm stumped, maybe you can help.
For a while now my .htm & .html file types are displayed with a default .exe icon in Windows XP. See the attached blog image to better illustrate this annoying bug, which seems to have survived all these years since Windows 95. Or not?
Even though it appears to be using the correct icon in the setup, it doesn't make any difference no matter how many times I try change the icon for these file types - they always display in the system with that ugly MS-DOS Application icon. I did a quick Google on the subject but didn't find much.
UPDATE: I eventually found the following via Google: Incorrect or generic Windows icon displayed for HTM and HTML files - which seems to have worked! Another result, Incorrect Display of Icons might help you too, if you ever experience this problem.

Exactly the same Jon, except I skipped the instructions from “Open Internet Explorer…” onwards. :)
yeah, go mozilla or go home eh ? :)
You can try using tweakui/powertoys progies which microsoft released ages ago. One of the functions is to rebuild the icons. I notice that sometimes icons get trashed when you uninstall some app. Ths icos usualy go back to what they were on their own.
“If that doesn’t work, blame windows it’s Kak” as most people would say.

Ya I’ve had that problem before too… weird huh ?
I found this, probably the same thing you found:
Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to the following location:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\ShellEx\IconHandler]
Backup the key by exporting it as a REG file. See here for more information on how to do that.
After backing up the key, delete the IconHandler key from the registry.
Close Registry Editor
Open Internet Explorer and click the Tools menu. Choose Internet Options and select the Programs tab.
Click Reset Web Settings button and complete the process.
