Just a quickie
With little over a month left to go, a week in review: visited the world's smallest country, saw the Pope talk outside the world's largest cathedral, climbed an active volcano, and visited a city that said volcano destroyed in 79 AD.Score one point for Italy... Naples is a great city, generally experience is proving that the smaller the city the more I tend to like it. Says much for London, eh. Also it's on the coast which I prefer.
A thunderstorm hit here last night, so I decided against Capri and am opting for more time in Greece instead where hopefully the weather will be more accommodating. I catch a train in two hours which will take me across Italy, bound for the Port of Bari. I need to organize accommodation still, but the plan is to catch a night ferry across to Corfu tomorrow. And then spend the next two weeks in the Greek islands, with a few days on the mainland. Open to itinerary suggestions, as always.
The much anticipated Mozilla Firefox 1.0 finally lands tomorrow. Oooh. Destined to become one of the biggest events on the web this year. I've promoted it tons but I've sometimes hesitated in suggesting it as a primary browser, despite it being solidly capable, simply because of it's "beta" status. But no more! Make the switch and rediscover the web. Yee-aaw!

Yeah I realise I am coming during the wrong season, but.. shit happens. This is just how things worked out so I’m just hoping for the best before hitting the colder countries. Thanks for the advice Phoat. To be honest I’m not so much interested in ruins and history, I’ve had enough of that in Rome… I just want to chill out for a week in scenic surroundings. If the weather is foul then I’ll move on up north and will only have an excuse to visit again some day! ;)
It’s like you’ve brought the cold weather with you. It took us totally by surprise… Well not really since it’s almost mid-November, but when you are used to 20-25 degree weather is it suddenly drops down to 15…
Rained like hell yesterday, but the weather people said it will get better during the week. Who knows tho. Winter weather is hard to predict in Greece. During the summer it never rains. It’s always beach day.
I’d say if you seiously have a chance to visit during the summer months come back then and skip over Greece for now. I seriously believe you’d enjoy it more. Plus all the girls wear less during the summer ;)

you are coming to Greece at the wrong time. You should have been here about a month ago when the weather was warmer and you could still go swimming. Not that you can’t now, the water’s still warm. It’s what happens when you get out of the water that’s the problem.
Since you’re entering Greece from the Northwest, I suggest a first stop as you said in Corfu, then travel to Gianena, Zagarohoria (stickly to take in the scenery these places don’t get much visitors during the week).
Then Thesaloniki (Greece’s sister capital) and Halkidiki. On your way down to Athens, stop at Meteora to visit the monestaries and Delphi for some acient ruins.. you can stop and rest at Athens for a couple of days and then island hop to Crete , Santorini, Siros, Rhodos… Crete in particular has a great canyon hiking trail (don’t know if it’s open now tho) called Samaria…
Back in Athens, you can go to Corith to see the canal (no big deal, just a big ditch), and then down to Sparta and Mystra to see the Byzantine ruins.
Seriously tho, there are no people in Greece during the winter, the islands for sure will be dead. If you visit during the Summer, I’d tell you to go to Myconos, Hydra, Santorini, Paros, and Kos.
Right now if you’re interested in night life, Athens and Thessaloniki is where to be, but the rest of the places have plenty to see as far as tourist attractions or just beautiful nature.
Hope I’ve helped.
