A routine I can love
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave
I'm not sure when I'll move on up to Lisbon; for now it's not even on my mind. Nothing much is, really... infact I'm having a tough time just stringing these sentences together.
I spent one night in Cádiz, followed by two nights in Sevilla - the home to modern-day bullfighting - and then crossed the border into the Algarve region of Portugal, which is where I've spent the past two nights. I was getting a little frustrated with the Spanish pensions - in Sevilla where the mercury (I hate that saying too but I'm using it anyway) hit 38°, I spent two nights in a windowless room just large enough to fit a single bed. I had to wake up the owners everytime I came or went. And not meeting anyone, so it's a welcomed change to be hanging out with a big group here. Plus it's half-price.
I'm sharing a room with another Capetonian, a 70+ year-old Englishman and a... SanDiegoian? I wake up for the best hostel breakfast ever (so far), then head down to one of the most amazing beaches for a good few hours. At sunset we hit the supermarket for dinner and drinks, and return to the hostel where we park off until 1am, armed with a 5 litre box of cheap wine and Red Bull mix with some Spanish beers inbetween, and talk about everything from Romanian politics to nipple sizes compared with Euro coins. (I'm a 2 euro). Then we get kicked out, and mission off on a pub crawl until everywhere has closed. It's a routine and I love it. Days are merging into one big memory.
I'll upload some more photos when I bother to find an icafe that isn't so restricted - this one only gives you access to chosen applications through their proprietary system which doesn't even afford you the option to right-click. How sadistic. But it's liberating in a way, knowing it's the only time I'll sit in front of a glaring monitor for the next 3 months.
I bought an underwater disposable (film! GAH!!) and plan on swimming around the grottos now taking random snaps. I've always wanted to take one of those half out/half in the water shots. Maybe tomorrow I'll catch a bus to Sagres, the most south-westerly point of Europe.

Hey man, I want to see a Halloween version of coda. I bet it’d be awesome. What do you think?
If you are still in the Algarve, try to visit Silves – a sleepy inland town, which used to be the capital of the Algarve – the castle and cathedral alone are well worth the trip. Of course, there are so many more places in the Algarve that you should visit, depending on how much time you have there. When you head north in direction to Lisbon, consider stopping over in Beja and Evora, the two largest cities in the Alentejo – both fascinating from the architectural / historical point of view.
All I can say is wow… Day, this last post reads like something out of a novel. It sounds like you’re having an amazing time – super jealous.
So when you finally hit Lisbon, be sure to visit the castle for a breathtaking landscape. And once there, take one of those stiched pictures (like the one I took from the same spot that’s posted on digicam.co.za) to show us how an expert does it!

Jim – it’s Halloween? ;)
Moman – we visited the Castle yesterday but the sun was in the wrong place so I didn’t try much other than take the few photos that I could. But definately a great view! Going to Sintra today, but tonight is my last night in Lisbon. I’ll spend tomorrow here too before catching the night bus to Madrid.
Bus?! Blah….you need to travel by rail in Europe… ;)~
lol guess I wasn’t thiking straight about where you are and all. You probably have better things to do on your travels than hold up in a cafe somewhere redesigning your weblog! Anyway it’s always good to read your travel entries, happy trails.
cool, thanks Paul, the swim was so beautiful, wish I had an underwater camera. I could see Morocco 1km before I was smashed into it’s hostile coast-line!!
… love your pics btw

sup Misha, glad to hear you’ve finally moved on from Lagos, haha. I won’t be around to help with the 10l box wine this time so good luck with that although I fear there are bigger missions to conquer in Amsterdam. ;) say hi to Ana from me, I’ll send some photos when I can – they’re all on CD.

I thought Crete was the most south-westerly point of Europe.
